Life is unpredictable

Life is an unpredictable journey; unpredictable but beautiful. We never know what comes next but when that beautiful journey is cut short by some extremely avoidable circumstances, it's absolutely gut wrenching. A small boil(also called a furuncle or 'Pilo' in Nepali) appeared on her left hand wrist which was treated in Om Hospital. She was taking antibiotics and the wound appeared to be healing. However, she got weaker and started suffering from sudden vomiting and fever. She was immediately taken to KMC Hospital on the 12th of June. The doctors, after the checkup, concluded the next morning that it was a case of gastritis as a result of the antibiotics she had been taking. She was advised to take some medicine for gastritis and to go for a follow up after a week. But the vomiting became even more prominent and she was rushed to the emergency ward in the hospital that very evening, ie around 6 PM on 13th June. The doctors kept telling us that the reports were normal and that she was healing but the fever didn't subside neither the vomiting. Her weak health and the doctor's continued insistence that she was improving kept us from shifting hospitals. On the evening of 15th June at around 6 PM, her face had gone pale and her eyes were bloodshot and she fell unconscious shivering and moaning. This was extremely painful to witness but what infuriated us more was that even at such a critical situation, there were no medical personnel present to take care of her. While she lay in the bed of one of the most famous hospitals of Kathmandu, her daughter felt so helpless that she decided to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation thinking it could keep her alive. The doctor arrived only after all of that and took her to the ICU. The complacency and carelessness shown by the doctors in dealing with her life was heartbreaking. Her family demanded that they transfer her to another hospital. However, the heartless doctors who had not taken proper care of her until then told them that the transfer could be fatal and that they couldn't guarantee that she would survive the journey. The family members had no other option but to wait for further reports and keep pleading with the doctors to take care of her. It was hard to even imagine that the medical personnel of one of the most renowned hospitals in the Capital of their country could exhibit such carelessness to a patient admitted in the ICU. However, the worst nightmare of the family came true due to the utter negligence and lack of empathy shown by the hospital staff and the doctors. They found out that she had passed away unnoticed, choked in her own vomit which had entered into her lungs through the respiratory pipe which was supposed to be keeping her alive. Her hands were binded by ropes as they said she was moving her hands very swiftly making her uncomfortable and immobilising her from doing any action which might have been the reason she couldn't ask for help while she was vomiting and choked. If the doctors and nurses present do not even care about the patients in the ICU, what can we expect from them? She was such a likeable, charming and beautiful person. Not beautiful just from outside but from inside with the sweetest and purest of hearts. She was a gem of a human being who was able to make a positive impact on whoever she met. Needless to say, she was loved by her family, friends, colleagues, her students. She was a teacher at Nandi Secondary School and KEBS College and was the life time member of Nepal Teacher's Association. She had come from humble roots from the district of Lamjung where she was the Topper in the SLC Examinations among girls. The Government Schools in Western Nepal and even in Kathmandu were closed for mourning her loss and the Deputy Prime Minister himself came to pay his respect and put the Flag over her funeral pyre. Everyone who knew her are still in shock that she is no more. Losing a loved one is hard but losing a loved one untimely, in clearly avoidable circumstances is just deeply disturbing. The doctors and nurses involved might be used to death and suffering and may not be bothered by it anymore but for those who lose their loved one, it is a devastating experience and especially since in this case, the circumstances which caused her death was so avoidable. Its been thirty days and I have known how it feels like. I have been through hell , every minute has been like a nightmare. I have felt the worst loss life could ever through at me and I don't want anybody else in this world to go through the situation that I have been. I know writing this or doing whatever won't return me my mother back but I don't want anybody else in this world to go through the situation I have been. I just want to aware people.

  1. This is such a shame ! We should report this thing to the hospital in-charge or the more authoritative person, so that it doesn't happen to another innocent being.

  2. I'm deeply saddened reading this :(
This is a major hospital carelessness which they should be held responsible. Remorseful how innocent people fall victims to the system.
I wish you all the strength, we're with you.

  3. Obviously, life is unpredictable but this is not something that happened universally. It is due to the hellish human tendency over helpless people. The cause of her loss is heart wrenching. I am pained beyond words ....My eyes fills up with tears every time I think about your loss and it's devastating cause.
Here to all the doctors in the world..... "You are not worth calling a doctor because you have a certificate of your degree hanging on your wall. Mind it! If you do not provide your hundred percent in saving a person's life, you are not a doctor."
